About Me

A native of urban Palm Beach County, Florida; my athletic endeavors took me to Hanover, New Hampshire to swim for Dartmouth College in the fall of 1993. Although I cannot even begin to describe all of the wonderful experiences that Dartmouth granted me, meeting a farm boy from Nebraska tops the list.  I met my husband Matt only two months after arriving in Hanover and I knew the moment that our eyes met that my life had changed forever.  We were married in June of 1996 and spent one more year at Dartmouth before making the move back “home” to Nebraska where Matt’s family owned and operated a diversified farm business. God blessed Matt and I with three wonderful daughters – Ashley Grace, Megan and Karyn who were all raised on our farm.

I spent twenty years as the “boss lady” of our cattle feed yard. In 2009, I was awarded the Beef Quality Assurance Producer of the Year Award for the volunteer work that I did promoting beef farmer education in cattle care (animal welfare), and food safety.  In 2013, I was voted to Vance Publishing’s 40 under 40 in Agriculture, in 2014 I was awarded Beef Magazine’s Trail Blazer Award and in 2017 the National Beef Checkoff awarded me the “Advocate of the Year” award — all awards for my work in consumer outreach through this blog site and corresponding social media on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

In January of 2017, we made the hard decision to close down our family owned cattle feedyard. Unsure of what I was meant to do next, I went to work for Progressive Beef, the quality management system for animal welfare and sustainability that we had used at our feedyard. For 3 and 1/2 years, I worked to improve animal welfare in feedyards across the Plains States. In 2020, God asked me to take a different turn in life. On April 30th, I “retired” from Progressive Beef to have more time to live out my faith through service. I volunteer as a youth small group leader and a coach when I am not working on our farm or filling in as a substitute teacher in our local public middle school.

This blog began in the spring of 2011 as a way for me to explain to my “city friends” about our cattle feedyard and the life that Matt and I were building on the farm. Over the course of close to a decade, I wrote posts on cattle welfare, caring for the environment, farming, and chronicling my life as a wife, a mom and a farmer. In 2018, God put on my heart to shift the blog and I began to write about my faith journey. The posts archived in the “Wednesday Wisdom” category are these faith writings. To date, I continue to write about the “doors and gates” that God opens and closes in my life.

Thank you for taking the time to visit! I pray that our stories of faith and farming are a blessing to you as you travel the journey!

Glad that you like it. The blog is actually not officially “launched” yet as I am still working the last few kinks out of it. But, I should be “live” in the next week or so and hope that you will follow me.

  4. Anne, found your blog and website today for the first time. Really enjoyed the professional manner in which you have told the story of modern agriculture. I am the President/CEO of United Egg Producers, a trade association for egg farmers. We, obviously have our challenges with activists and have been trying to tell customers about our farms. You are welcome to go to our websites http://www.uepcertified.com and http://www.usaeggfarming.com to learn about our animal welfare programs. Finally, let me compliment you for being a great spokesperson for the beef cattle farmers. Keep up the good work.

  6. Great blog! Love the attitude shown in your video. I have added you to the Texas Crossroads links page at http://www.txcg.org/aglinks.html Texas Crossroads is trying to promote agriculture through the various cowboy genres of entertainment, as well as educating about reduced stress cattle handling.

  7. Interesting blog – love the passion and enthusiasm for agriculture. Look forward to reading more.

I love this blog. This blog has inspired my Ag 2 class to become more informed with Nebraska agriculture and the people that affect us, especially HSUS and PETA. Thank you for representing Nebraska.

Great job!! So much of what you say and do applies to the breeding and raising end of beef production too. I’m very glad we have the opportunity to work together . Be seeing you soon, hopefully.

  12. Life is ironic sometimes. My hubby and I were just watching RFD-TV the other day about the angus cattle as we are interested and getting informaiton on how to run our own farm and saw you on the angus show. Then I was checking out my followers and there you were. I was born in FL also and my Dad was born and raised there. We are just facinated on how to raise cattle better as well as other animals. We are researching and getting as muh info as we can to start our own farm Things have changed since our families had cattle when we were kids. It is also ironic my mom was born and raised in NE and my Uncle and Grandmother still live there outside Herman. My Uncle used to help my Great-Grandfather (when he was alive) run cattle on the family farm until a few years ago when the goverment basically paid him to stop doing any farming for a while and since he has not gotten back to it. He has trees he grows as well as used to have pheasants he raised. Now he works for Cargill driving and making metal buildings and stuff. He has also helped out many feed yards near him he told hubby and I. I am so happy to have found your blog and you mine 🙂

    • It does seem, at times, that we live in a very small world! I am glad that you got to see the Angus segment and that you are also thinking of raising cattle. It is always exciting to hear of someone who is interested in diversifying their farm with cattle.

If you ever head back to Nebraska to visit family, please be sure to let me know–I’d love to meet you in person. In the meantime, I look forward to reading your blogs and am very thankful that you have signed up to follow mine. I love your pictures–my sister-in-law is a veterinarian who lives outside of Blacksburg and it is fun to see the beautiful Virginia landscape!

      All the best,
      Anne

      • I got my undergrad degree in Roanoke just down the road from Backsburg… our world is getting smaller 😉 I now live up closer to MD/WV tip of VA. We go to visit my Granmother every couple of years in NE, as we can afford, and woudl love to meet you. I will let you know when we get things saved to go back for a visit. We are trying to get things in order and save so we can buy more land somewhere and start the farm we dream of. We don’t have enough for much now. I look forward to keeping up with the cattle part and your life on your bog 🙂 I will try to keep the pictures comming on mine 🙂

      • I look forward to it!

Have a wonderful and blessed Christmas/holiday season 🙂

        Anne

      • You and your family also 🙂

Oh, my word! Your site was recommended to me at a recent Iowa Cattlemen’s Assocation Conference and I feel as if I’ve found a kindred spirit. You’re right! Life as an athlete does provide the mental and physical toughness to transition to cattle ranching! As a former competitive distance swimmer residing in the city, I have tremendous appreciation for what you’re doing. I recently lept off a cliff into the cattle industry (hoping to grow wings on the way down) in order to perpetuate my family’s 100+year hertiage of cattle ranching. I’m hoping to join the blogging world by mid-January in an effort to better connect people to their food. Let’s stay in touch!
    Warmest Regards,
    Kim Waltman

    • Kim, I’d love to visit with you sometime! Let’s try to get in touch after the holidays. I hope that you sign up to follow the blog 🙂

Thanks for reaching out to me. Have a wonderful holiday! I look forward to getting to know you—we are almost neighbors!

      All the best,
      Anne

  14. Bruce

Hi my name is Bruce and I attend Cardinal Newman, your mom was my english teacher for two years. Recently my AP Environmental teacher, Ms. Anderson, told our class to follow your blogs because we just watched the movie “Food Inc.” Anyway, we will continue to follow your blogs to learn how the beef proccessing really works. Your work is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    • Hi Bruce,

It’s great to hear from you! I am so glad that you all are going to follow the blog. I hope that you will both ask questions and also find the information useful. I love it that you had my mom as a teacher—that brings a smile to my face. She is a fabulous and passionate teacher.

If you have any questions directly about the movie, please send them to me and I would be happy to answer them. It’s been a couple of years since I watched it, but I did participate in a television “farmer panel” discussion on the movie right when it was released.

Again, it is great to hear from you and I hope that you all will not only read the posts but also participate in the “conversation”.

      All the best from Nebraska!
      Anne

    • Hi Christy! Yes, this is Anne from Lytal. Awesome to hear from you. I am doing well — have lived in rural Nebraska for almost 20 years now farming with my husband and our family. How are you? Do you still live in Florida?

    Hi Anne,
I just have to say that I just stumbled across your page today and I plan to continue to follow you! I’m 24 years old, from Nebraska and have met the man I hope I will marry some day. His brothers and him hope to take over and grow their 300 head to 1,000 in the future and are slowly working their way there. They have come along way from their father starting with just a few cows. I live an hour away and spend most of my weekends with him, I love working on the farm with him and I love seeing them expand. I have always dreamed of being involved with cows and hope to better educate myself so I can help them succeed and learn more about the beef industry. I admire you and will continue to follow your page.

    Thank you for the motivation!

Wow, I enjoyed your site and youtube video. I found you by goggle searching ” Are cattle creatures of habit?”. I did this becasuse I am getting up early to photograph some cattle, nearby, for fun. I live in Colorado, but was born and raised in Grand Island NE. Thanks
